Basic art

GLASS WORKS – 2 year course
This course consists of Stained Glass and Glass Fusion. Although in practice they are different from each other because they use different techniques, both are a form of art having at their base the use of coloured glass and patterns to form all sorts of artistic glass works.
Age Group – 16 years and over

Level of Education Required – Basic Art is recommended
Art at ‘O’ and ‘A’ Levels – 1 year course
Age Group – 14 years and over
Certification Target – ‘O’ / ‘A’ Level Examination
WOOD AND STONE CARVING – 2 year course
This course helps students to evaluate and translate ideas into two or three dimensions. During the first year, the student is taught how to handle the tools and materials. In the second year, students proceed to two/three dimensional studies in wood and stone.
Age Group – 16 years and over

Level of Education Required – Basic Art is recommended
Basic Art Adults – 2 year course
Age Group – over 16 years and over
Certification Target – Certificate after 1 year, Certificate after 2 years (Folio required)
THREAD FILIGREE – 2 year course
This course teaches the art of developing delicate ornamental work from twisted silver wire, thread and pearls to form any fanciful decoration.
Age Group – 16 years and over

When students qualify in Thread Filigree and Monasteru as well, they will be awarded a Certificate
Pencil / Charcoal / Ink Art – 1 year course

GRAPHICAL COMMUNICATION and DESIGN – 2 year course
The aim of this course is to develop the ability to communicate graphically. The importance of graphia, or the ability to impart data by means of drawings and diagrams, is widely recognized in today’s world of Technology. It even crosses the language barriers and provides us with a single system that can be universally understood.
Age Group – 10 years and over

OIL / WATER PAINTING – 2 year course
From the Basic Art course, students can proceed to this course. The main aim of this course is to encourage students to develop a lively curiosity to explore and experiment in visual terms, use their imagination, the powers of acute observation, personal enthusiasm and pleasure in art.

C.A.D. Auto CAD – 2 year course
This course makes use of specifically computer aided programs and systems to design detailed two or three dimensional drawings.

CLAY MODELLING AND CASTING – 2 year course
This course aims to develop the students’ ability to evaluate and translate ideas into two and three dimensions. The materials available include local clay, plaster of paris and molding rubber.

FERROBATTUTO – 2 year course
This course aims to develop the students’ ability in evaluating and translating ideas into two and three dimensions by using iron. This craft was very popular in the old ages and can be seen from works still present in churches, buildings of character and all around Gozo.

GILDING – 3 year course
Gilding is the application of alloys and precious metals, like gold and silver, onto various surfaces. The aim of this course is to promote the traditional artisan skills of the local gilder starting from polichromy and mordants, and leading to the 24ct water laid gilding.

PARCHMENT CRAFT – 1 year course
This course consists of making creative projects with parchment paper, which is a transparent waxed paper. This specialized paper lends itself to many techniques, such as tracing, embossing, painting, bending, cutting, and many other uses. Through this craft, one can make greeting cards, invitations, home decorations and handmade flowers.

LACE
The aim of this course is to promote and nurture one of the most indigenous crafts in Gozo. Whilst keeping the tradition in the subject, we also offer lessons in design which may vary from traditional to contemporary.
MONASTERU – 1 year course
This course is a specialized branch of Thread Filigree with Tapestry work. Students who have already mastered the art of producing fanciful decorations from wire, thread, pearls and beads are taught how to mount such decorations in different designs, forming frames of fine art.
Age Group – 16 years and over

Lace Juniors – 2 year course
Age Group – 7 years and over

TEXTILE DESIGN – 2-year course
This course aims to teach the student to produce different items from different textiles. This, after taking into consideration the location of the item, the style, the design and the colours scheme.

ART ATTACK – Junior Art and Craft Course – 1 year course
A basic course in different art disciplines to enhance creativity and imagination in young, promising artists and to promote, from an early age their artistic talents.
Age Group : 7 to 12 years

POTTERY / CERAMICS – 2 year course
This course provides opportunities for students to develop individual skills, creativity and design. They are also encouraged to experiment in the production of useful items based on different types of clay.

PAPIER MACHE – 1-year course
Papier Mache is one of the most versatile crafts around! There is no right or wrong way to do it. There is not even a right or wrong way to spell it!
You can create forms of art for your paper mache projects easily. Use cardboard and masking tape to design almost anything! People of all ages can enjoy paper mache. The steps you need to follow to create paper mache masterpieces are fairly simple. Items of all shapes and sizes can be made using this crafting method. You can make your own jewellery, vases, bowls, masks, piñatas, or even furniture. You are only limited by your imagination.

PYROGRAPHY – 2 year course
Pyrography is an exciting method of making pictures or decorating plain wooden objects using heat. Pictures and patterns in Pyrography may be figurative or geometric. It entails details and precision.

MOSAIC – 1-year course
The student will learn techniques of mosaic-making, including: choice of medium (marble, glass, tile etc) ; the properties of the various materials used (adhesives, grouts etc) ; use of mosaic – making tools ; health and safety factors ; and design considerations.

SILVER SMITH – 2 year course
A silversmith is trained to form miniature items of fine art. These are produced for their intrinsic aesthetic worth. The product is designed in such a way that the end result is perceived as very fine, as well as attractive.
Typical work activities include:
• annealing metal and silverware to soften the materials for reworking;
• preparing materials for soldering;
• filigree;
• hammering and shaping metal and silver articles;
• using design knowledge to produce technical plans, blueprints, drawings and models.

LEATHER WORKS – 1 year course
This course teaches students how to make artifacts made of leather. The course includes also the techniques of embossing and patchwork, done either by hand or using specific machinery. These items vary from household goods and decorative goods to everyday useful items such as wallets, key rings and bags. Just let your imagination lead you.

UPHOLSTERY – 1-year course
Participants should have a Secondary School education. A knowledge of Technical Design interpretation will make it easier to follow this course. The course comprises the step-by-step learning process involved in the upholstery trade, mainly the stuffing and covering of chairs and sofas. Manipulation and implementation of machinery and hand-tools are also included. Theory lessons are delivered as shop-talk during practice. Students will be asked to choose their own tasks to be worked out during their practice period.

CANE / PALM WORKS – 1 year course
This course teaches how cane, palm and dried flowers can be weaved in baskets, trays, mats and a variety of other items of all shapes and design. Being creative is a must!

JEWELLERY ART – 2-year course
This course aims to develop the students’ abilities to create innovative jewellery using different metals, glass and local stone. It also introduces the technique of enameling, which is a process of applying a vitreous, either transparent or opaque, protective or decorative coating made from silica (a kind of glass) heated in a kiln or furnace, and fused onto metal (usually copper or gold), glass, or ceramic wear. It is often applied as a paste which solidifies in firing as areas of colour.

TAPESTRY / EMBROIDERY / CROSS-STITCH
Participants will have the possibility to learn how to design and work various embroidery items, such as table-cloths, pictures, runners, napkins, cushions, etc, through the use of various hand-stitches and other methods. One can also learn different types of techniques and methods such as filling work, drawn threads, hansa, cut-work, etc.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP SKILLS
Entrepreneurship is the practice of starting a new business, with a good level of business skills. Training in entrepreneurship makes you a good leader, while at the same time helps you to manage and foresee the future state of the business that is preferred to the present state.

CANDLE / WAX CRAFTS
This course introduces the student to the historic process of candle-making using step-by-step techniques. This course also includes information about the different types of wax available and other related material. This course also takes into consideration the wider dimension of candle-making as a craft which creates useful objects and enhancing creativity in students.
